DREM releases today on its website the publication “Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2016” and updates the Time Series on Demography

DREM releases today on its website the publication “Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2016”. This edition is composed of several chapters – resident population, births, marriages, deaths, foreign population and divorces -  all of them previously released in different occasions, with the exception of the chapter on foreign population and divorces, now made available for the first time.

The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Resident Population

On the 31st of December of 2016, the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 254,876, of which 1118,860 were men and 136,016 women. The crude rate of increase was -0.6% (-0.9% in 2015).

In 2016, the crude rate of natural increase was -2.9‰, while the crude migratory rate stood at -3.1‰.

The proportion of youth population (population under 15 years old) continued to shrink in 2016, representing 14.3% of the total population (14.8% in 2015).

The proportion of older people (population aged 65 or over) maintained the increasing trend of the previous years, reaching 16.0% of the resident population (15.6% in 2015). As a result, the ageing ratio continued to rise, standing at 111.5 older persons per 100 young persons (105.3 in 2015).

Births

In 2016, 1,858 live births to mothers living in RAM were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 4.6% compared to the previous year.

The crude birth rate dropped from 7.6 to 7.3 live births per 1,000 inhabitants between 2015 and 2016.

52.0% of the children born in the reference year were male, representing a sex ratio of 108%, i.e. for each 100 children of the female gender, 108 children of the male gender were born.

33.7% of the live births were from women under 30 years old.

Marriages

861 marriages were counted in 2016, an increase of 8.6% over the prior year (793 marriages).

The crude marriage rate was 3.4 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.

The highest number of marriages was registered in September (113) and the lowest in January (40).

70.7% of the marriages were “first marriages”.

65.7% of the marriages were civil and 33.7% catholic.

The preferred property scheme in the marriages celebrated in 2016 was joint marital property (73.1%).

Divorces

In 2016, there were 652 divorces in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 10 from the previous year.

The crude divorce rate was 2.6 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants (2.5 in 2015 and 2.1 in 2014).

There were 74 divorces per 100 marriages in 2014, 81 in 2015 and 76 in 2016.

Deaths

2,612 deaths were counted in 2016, one more than in 2015.  

94.1% of the deceased persons aged 50 or more and 63.1% were above 75 years old.

The crude death rate was 10.2 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants.

December was the month with the highest number of deaths (260), while the lowest value was registered in October (171 deaths).

In the year of reference, 5 deaths under 1 year and seven dead fetuses were registered. The infant mortality rate in 2016 was 2.7‰ (3.6‰ in 2015).

In 2016, there were 5 perinatal deaths (11 in 2015): 3 deaths of live births under 7 days old and 2 deaths of live births with 28 or more weeks of gestation.

Foreign population

On the 31st of December of 2016, the foreign population with resident status totalled  6,110 (up by 6.4% from 2015).

The British (14.5%), Brazilian (12.6%), Venezuelan (11.5%) and German (7.5%) nationalities constitute the largest foreign communities residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The Venezuelan nationality had a sharp increase (21.0%) in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit (581 in 2015 and 703 in 2016).
