In 2017
Net migration surplus for the first in the decade slowed down the population decrease
According to the Resident Population Estimates, 254,368 persons were residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on the 31st of December of 2017, which represents a negative change rate of 0.2% when compared to same date of 2016. Of that total, 118,411 were men and 135,957 women. The population of the Region has been dropping consecutively since 2011, although the net migration surplus recorded in 2017, softened this decline. The return to the Region of Madeiran emigrants in Venezuela offset the exit of resident population.
The decrease in the resident population is explained by the negative natural change (-553 persons). The municipalities of Santa Cruz (0.89%), Porto Santo (0.22%) and Ponta do Sol (0.03%) were the only in which the crude rate of population change was positive, while the lowest values in this variable were registered in the municipalities of Santana and Machico (-1.0% and -0.89%, respectively).

In 2017, the population density of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 317.7 inhabitants per km2. Funchal had the highest value (1,373.8 pop/km2) and Porto Moniz the lowest (28.7 pop/km2).
In the reference year, the proportion of youth population (15 years old and under) represented 13.9% of the total population (14.3% in 2016), while the proportion of the population aged 65 and over rose to 16.4% (16.0% in 2016). The ageing ratio reached 117.8, i.e., 117.8 older persons (65 and over) per 100 young persons. In 2016, the ratio was 111.5.
In 2017, the total fertility rate stood at 1.16 (meaning 1.16 children per woman aged between 15 and 49). In 2016 this indicator was 1.07.
