Increase in net migration surplus was insufficient to prevent a slight fall in the resident population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

According to the Resident Population Estimates, 253,945 persons were residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on the 31st of December of 2018, which represents a negative change rate of 0.2% when compared to same date of 2017. Of that total, 118,585 were men and 135,360 women. The population of the Region has been dropping consecutively since 2011, although the net migration surplus recorded in 2017 and 2018 – which resulted from the return of Madeiran emigrants in Venezuela to the Region - softened this decline.

The decrease in the resident population is explained by the negative natural change (-811 persons), corresponding to a higher number of deaths than births. In fact, there was an increase in the number of deaths (+216) and a decline in the number of live births (-41), compared to 2017.

The municipalities of Santa Cruz (7.4‰) and Porto Santo (0.6‰) were the only in which the crude rate of population change was positive, while the lowest values in this variable were registered in the municipalities of Machico, Santana and Porto Moniz (-8.8‰, -8.6‰ and -8.5‰, respectively).

In 2018, the population density of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 316.8 inhabitants per km². Funchal had the highest value (1,366.5 pop/km²) and Porto Moniz the lowest (28.3 pop/km²).

In the reference year, the proportion of youth population (15 years old and under) represented 13.5% of the total population (13.9% in 2017), while the proportion of the population aged 65 and over rose to 16.7% (16.4% in 2017). The ageing ratio reached 123.6, i.e., 123.6 older persons (65 and over) per 100 young persons. In 2017, this ratio was 117.8.

In 2018, the total fertility rate stood at 1.15 (meaning 1.15 children per woman aged between 15 and 49). In 2017 this indicator was 1.16.
