Resident population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira continued to decrease
On December 31, 2013, the resident population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 261,313 people, 1,778 less than a year before (-0.7 %). This population change was the result of a negative migration balance (-1,181) and also of a negative natural balance (-597).
In 2013, the ageing index – the ratio between the number of elderly persons of an age when they are generally economically inactive (aged 65 and over) to the number of young persons (from 0 to 14) - remained below 100 (95 elders per 100 youngsters). In 2012 this index was at 90.6.
In the reference year, there were 1,839 live births to mothers resident in Madeira, 10.2% less than in 2012, which corresponds to a crude birth rate of 7.0‰ (7.8 ‰ in 2012).
In 2013, there were 2,436 deaths, a decrease of 5.7% compared to 2012 (2,583), which resulted in a crude mortality rate of 9.3 deaths per thousand inhabitants. There were 5 deaths of children under 1 year (the same value as in 2012), three of which were less than 28 days old (1 in 2012). Consequently, the infant mortality rate stood at 2.7 deaths per thousand live births.
During the year of 2013, 793 marriages and 616 divorces were recorded in Madeira.
In the reference year, the foreign-born population resident in Madeira decreased by 6.6% compared with the year before, totaling 5,829 persons. Brazil is the most common country of birth among the foreign-born (14.9% of the total), followed by United Kingdom and Venezuela with 14.1% and 9.8% of the total, respectively.
