In the first nine months of 2022
Natural decrease was higher than in the same period of the previous year
Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in the first three quarters of 2022, the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a negative natural balance of -1,043 persons, resulting from a lower number of live births (1,294) than the number of deaths (2,337). In the same period of 2021, the natural balance had also been negative although less sharp (-825 persons, representing the difference between 1,262 live births and 2,087 deaths).
The number of live births in the first nine months of 2022 (1,294) increased by 2.5% compared to the same period of 2021, while the number of deaths recorded in the first three quarters of 2022 (2,337) was 12.0% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
Between January and September of 2022, 1 death under the age of 1 year and 5 dead foetuses were registered.
In the period of reference, a total of 886 marriages took place, up by 267 (+43.1%) from the same period of 2021. The number of marriages celebrated in the first nine months of 2022 reached the highest value since the same period of 2009.
