In 2022

Natural decrease in the population stood at 1,343 persons

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in 2022 the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease of 1,343 persons, since the number of live births in this period (1,759) was lower than the number of deaths (3,102). In 2021, the natural balance had been equally negative, although less sharp, of -1,131 individuals (1,744 live births and 2,875 deaths).

The natural balance recorded in 2022 was the lowest ever of the available time series (since 1970).

Compared to 2021, the number of live births increased by 0.9% while the number of deaths went up by 7.9%.

In 2022, 3 deaths under 1 year and 7 dead foetuses were reported. In 2021, the number of deaths under 1 year (6 deaths) was higher and the number of dead foetuses (6 dead foetuses) was slightly lower.

In the period of reference, 1,139 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, up by 273 (+31.5%) from 2021 and up by 527 (+86.1%) over 2020.
