In May 2023, the number of deaths decreased by 11.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 8.5%
In May 2023, there were 210 recorded deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), which is 28 fewer deaths compared to May 2022, representing a decrease of 11.8%. In the first five months of the year, there were 1,204 deaths, which is 166 fewer deaths compared to the same period last year, showing a decrease of 12.1%.
When assessing "excess mortality" by comparing the number of deaths in the reference month to the average values from 2016 to 2019 (pre-pandemic reference period), there was a mortality deficit of 0.7%. This indicates that the number of deaths in May 2023 was lower compared to the average values of the same month in the years before the pandemic, except for May 2017.
During the reference period, there were 2 fetuses (1 female and 1 male), and no deaths under 1 year of age were reported.
Regarding live births, May 2023 saw 141 births, which is an increase of 8.5% compared to May 2022 (+11 births). From January to May 2023, a total of 710 live births were recorded, only one fewer than the same period in 2022.
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 69 persons in May 2023, showing an improvement compared to the same month in the previous year when there was a natural decrease of 108. From January to May 2023, the cumulative natural balance was -494, indicating an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-659).
In May 2023, there were 92 marriages, which is a decrease of 14.8% compared to the number of marriages conducted in May 2022 (16 fewer marriages). From January to May 2023, a total of 343 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 9 marriages (+2.7%) compared to the same period last year.
