Number of deaths decreased by 19.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 6.0%
In June 2023, there were 220 recorded deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a lower figure than observed in June 2022 (a decrease of 54 deaths or -19.7%). In the first half of the year, a total of 1,424 deaths occurred, which is 220 fewer than the corresponding period of the previous year (-13.4%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (pre-pandemic reference period), reveals an excess mortality rate of 9.3%. This reflects the fact that the number of deaths during consistently remained lower than the value recorded in June 2023.
During the reference period, no deaths under 1 year of age or fetuses were reported.
Furthermore, in June 2023, there were 123 live births, marking a 6.0% increase compared to the same month in 2022 (an increase of 7 births). The total number of live births registered in the first six months of 2023 (833) exceeded that of the same period in 2022 (827) by 0.7% (an increase of 6 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 97 persons in June 2023. This was a less adverse situation than in the same month of the previous year, which had a value of -158. In the first six months of 2023, the natural balance was -591, indicating an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (817).
In the sixth month of 2023, 103 marriages were celebrated, representing a decrease of 6.4% compared to the number of marriages conducted in June 2022 (7 fewer marriages). From January to June 2023, a total of 446 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 2 compared to the corresponding period.
