Number of deaths decreased by 18.3% compared to the same month last year, while the number of live births increased by 5.0%
In July 2023, there were 214 recorded deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), which is a lower figure compared to July 2022 (48 fewer deaths, marking an -18.3% decrease). Over the first seven months of the year, there were a total of 1,639 deaths, representing a decrease of 267 compared to the same period last year, equating to a -14.0% decrease.
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019, indicates an excess mortality rate of 13.1%. This reflects the fact that in those combined years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the figure recorded in July 2023.
During this period, there was 1 foetus recorded, and no deaths under 1 year of age were reported.
Also, in July 2023, there were 146 live births, representing a 5.0% increase compared to the same month in 2022 (an increase of 7 births). The total number of live births recorded in the first seven months of 2023 (979) exceeded that of the same period in 2022 (966), with a 1.3% increase (13 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 68 persons in July 2023, which is less severe than in the same month last year when it recorded a value of -123. In the first seven months of 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -660, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-940).
In the seventh month of 2023, 134 marriages were celebrated, representing a decrease of 6.9% compared to the number of marriages conducted in July 2022 (10 fewer marriages). From January to July 2023, 580 marriages were celebrated, which is eight fewer than the corresponding period in the previous year.
