In 2023
Number of divorces decreased compared to the previous year
Provisional data on dissolved marriages by divorce indicate that in 2023, 520 divorces were decreed for couples whose family residence was in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, down by 33 over 2022. This corresponds to a crude divorce rate of 2,0‰ (compared to 2,2‰ in 2022).
Among the municipalities, Câmara de Lobos recorded the lowest divorce rate in the Region (1.6‰), while Porto Moniz had the highest number of divorces per thousand inhabitants (3.2‰).
The vast majority of divorces were between opposite-sex couples. There were only 2 divorces between male same-sex couples and none between female same-sex couples.
In 2023, 72.5% of the decreed divorces were "by mutual consent," while the remaining 27.5% resulted from divorces declared “without the consent of one of the spouses”.
The average age at the time of divorce was 49.0 years for men and 46.6 years for women (compared to 48.2 years and 45.8 years in 2022, respectively).
Regarding the length of the marriage, 72.9% of the divorces involved unions that had lasted 10 or more years (379 divorces), and 27.1% stemmed from marriages lasting less than 10 years (141 divorces). It is worth noting that 45.8% of the divorces decreed were from marriages lasting 20 years or more, with a particular focus on the 20-24 years group (91 divorces; 17.5%). Additionally, 16.9% of divorces resulted from marriages lasting 30 years or more (88 divorces).
