Number of physicians, pharmacists and nurses increased
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2018 was 1 080, up by 4.7% when compared to the corresponding day of 2017 (1 032 physicians). Of those 55.6% (601) were women. According to place of residence, 73.3% of the physicians were in Funchal and 12.0% in Santa Cruz.
Of the total of doctors in 2018, 617 were specialists (57.1%), who held 723 specialties. Of these, 21.0% referred to General and Family Medicine, 9.5% to Internal Medicine, 5.5% to General Surgery and 5.4% to Obstetric Gynecology.
On average, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira there were 4.3 doctors per 1 000 inhabitants. This indicator reached its maximum in Funchal (7.6 doctors per 1 000 inhabitants) and its lowest in Calheta and Santana municipalities (0.7 doctors per thousand inhabitants).
The number of registered nurses in thei Guild increased by 2.3% in 2018 compared to 2017 (2 272 in 2018; 2 221 in 2017). On average, there were 8.9 nurses per 1 000 inhabitants.
In the same year, there were 234 pharmacists (down by from 2017) and according to the workplace, 57.7% were in Funchal and 10.7% in Santa Cruz.
The data now available is part of the "2018 Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira" publication, the full edition of which will be released in December 2019.
