In 2018
Hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a decrease in the number medical consultations in the external consultation unit and in the attendance of emergency departments, but the number of surgeries increased
In 2018, there were nine hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining six private, all located in the municipality of Funchal.
In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 1,846 (up by 2.5% from 2017), representing a ratio of 7.3 beds per 1,000 inhabitants.
At the end of 2018, the hospital staff consisted of 467 doctors (+8.1% over 2017) , 1,195 nurses (+3.5%), 233 technicians of diagnostics and therapeutics (+3.6%), and 1,104 other staff workers (+17.9%). Compared to 2017, the persons employed in hospitals in 2018 rose by 8.1%.
There were 295.2 thousand medical consultations in the external consultation unit of hospitals, a lower figure when compared to 2017 (309,1 thousand consultations).

25.8 thousand persons stayed overnight as inpatients (25.1 thousand in 2017), corresponding to 550,8 thousand days of hospitalisation.
32,4 surgeries (except small surgeries) per day were performed in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In the reference year, 118.3 thousand persons were attended in the emergency departments (122.5 thousand in 2017).
