Number of physicians, nurses and pharmacists increased
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2019 was 1,129, up by 4.5% when compared to the corresponding day of 2018 (1,080 physicians). Of those 55.9% (631) were women. According to place of residence, 73.3% of the physicians were in Funchal and 12.2% in Santa Cruz.
Of the total of doctors in 2019, 633 were specialists (56.1%) that held 741 specialties. Of these, 21.1% refered to General and Family Medicine, 9.3% to Internal Medicine, 5.8% to General Surgery and 5.2% to Pediatrics.
On average, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) there were 4.4 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants. The highest expression of this indicator was in Funchal (8.0 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Santana municipality (0.7 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants). The ratio for the ARM stands below the country (5.4), but above the Autonomous Region of the Azores (3.6).
The number of registered nurses in their order increased by 2.8% in 2019 compared to 2018 (2,335 in 2019; 2,272 in 2018). On average, there were 9.2 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, a higher value than in Portugal (7.4) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (8.9).
In the same year, there were 237 pharmacists (up by 3 over 2018) and according to the workplace, 57.8% were in Funchal and 11.4 % in Santa Cruz. The data now available is included in the " 2019 Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira" publication, the full edition of which will be released in December 2020.
