Number of physicians, dentists and nurses increased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The number of physicians registered in the Guild on December 31st of 2020 was 1,202, up by 6.5% when compared to the corresponding day of 2019 (1,129 physicians). Of those 56.4% (678) were women. According to place of residence, 72.8% (875) of the physicians were in Funchal, 12.7% (153) in Santa Cruz and 4.2% (51) in Câmara de Lobos.
Of the total number of physicians in 2020, 665 were specialists (55.3%) and 537 (44.7%) were non- specialists.
On average, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, there were 4.7 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants. By municipality the highest value was recorded in Funchal (8.4 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Calheta (0.8 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants). The ratio for the Autonomous Region of Madeira stands below the country (5.6), but above the Autonomous Region of the Azores (3.7).
The number of dentists registered in their professional order was 216, representing an increase of 4.3% when compared to 2019 (207). On average, there were 0.9 dentists per thousand inhabitants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This ratio stands below the country (1.1), but above the Autonomous Region of the Azores (0.7).
The number of registered nurses in The Portuguese Order of Nurses increased by 2.1% in 2020 when compared to 2019 (2,335). On average, there were 9.4 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, a higher value than in Portugal (7.6) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (9.3).
In the same year, there were 240 pharmacists and according to their workplace, 58.8% (141) were in Funchal and 11.7 % (28) in Santa Cruz.
The data now available is included in the " 2020 Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira" publication, whose full edition will be released in December 2021.
