In 2021
Deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased by 6.2%
1,727 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) were carried out in 2021, representing a 6.2% decrease over 2020 (1,842 deliveries). Twenty-three were twins’ births. Since 2018, this indicator has maintained a downward trend, with the value for 2021 being the second lowest in the series that began in 2020 (in 2014 there were 1,725 deliveries). In the year of reference, 78.9% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years (1 363 deliveries), 12.3% from mothers aged between 16 and 24 years (212) and 8.8% from mothers with 40 years or over (152). The percentage of mothers aged 40 or over was, in 2021, slightly higher than in the previous year (8.6%). The number of young mothers (under 25 years old) dropped by 1.8 percentage points compared to 2020. However, the age group that stands out is mothers aged between 30 and 36 years old (41.6% of the deliveries).
It should be noted that 92.9% of the pregnancies lasted 37 weeks or over and 6.0% had a duration inferior to 37 weeks.
The municipalities that registered the highest proportion of deliveries were Funchal (41.2%), followed by Santa Cruz (19.0%) and Câmara de Lobos (15.7%).
The data now released will be included in the publication “Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2021”, which will be made available in the first quarter of 2023.
