Hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded an increase of 12,2% compared to 2019 in the number of outpatient appointments
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today, on its website, the data from the Hospitals Survey 2021. The data now available reveal the impact that the pandemic COVID-19 had on the health sector in the last two years.
The Hospitals Survey data shows that in 2021, similarly to 2020, there were 10 hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 3 of which are official and 7 are private, all located in the municipality of Funchal.
The average number of used hospital beds in the year in question (arithmetic mean of the quarters) was 2,077 beds (1,040 in public hospitals and 1,037 in private hospitals), which represented an increase of 2.9% when compared to 2020 (2,018). The bed ratio per 1,000 inhabitants rose to 8.3 in 2021 (7.9 in 2020).
At the end of 2021, the hospital staff consisted of 561 doctors, 1,482 nurses, 336 technicians of diagnostics and therapeutics, and 1,537 auxiliary workers, totaling 5,058 health professionals. When compared to 2020, the hospital staff in 2021 rose by 7.5%, an increase that was shared by the following professional types: + 9.6% in the number of doctors, + 4.7% in nurses, +25.4% in diagnostic and therapeutic technicians and +6.7% in auxiliary personnel.
In 2021, there were 25.2 thousand hospitalisations, an increase of 17.1% compared to 21.5 thousand in 2020 and a decrease of 5.7% compared to 2019 (26.8 thousand). To that figure corresponded 572.7 thousand hospitalisation days.
In addition, 353.6 thousand outpatient appointments were performed, 31.3% above 2020 (269.3 thousand consultations) and 12.2% above 2019 (315.3 thousand). It should be noted that psychiatry was the health area with the highest increase compared to 2020 (+46.0%).
On average, about 53.5 surgeries (except minor surgeries) were performed per day in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2021, of which 33.2 were performed in public hospitals. The global average value represents an increase of 15.2 surgeries per day compared to 2020 (38.3) and 13.2 surgeries per day compared to 2019 (40.3).
In the emergency services of the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira,118.3 thousand attendances were carried out, which corresponds to an increase of 27.9% compared to 2020 (92.5 thousand attendances) and a decrease of 5.5% compared to 2019 (125.2 thousand). Approximately 85.1% of the attendances carried out in 2021 took place in public hospitals.
