Vaccination coverage in the Autonomous Region of Madeira ranged from 93.9% to 99.5%

In the recommended immunization schedule, in 2021, vaccination coverage in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in children who have turned 1 year old ranged between 98.7% (Neisseria meningitidis B invasive disease vaccine - second dose) and 99.5% (13-serotype Streptococcus pneumoniae conjugate vaccine - second dose). In this age group, the coverage of the 13-serotype Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine increased by 0.1 percentage points (pp) compared to 2020. For the remaining vaccines, vaccination coverage decreased compared to the previous year by 0.3 pp.

In children who have reached the age of 2 years, the vaccines whose coverage has evolved more markedly should be highlighted: the fourth dose of the vaccines against invasive disease by Haemophilus influenzae, against diphtheria, against tetanus, against whooping cough/pertussis and against poliomyelitis which showed coverage of 97.5% (95.0% in 2020), the vaccine against invasive Neisseria meningitidis C disease (single dose), which recorded 99.2% coverage (97.4% in 2020) and the vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae infections of 13 serotypes with 99.1% coverage (97.3% in 2020). For the remaining vaccines, the coverage rate increased by 1.0 pp compared to 2020 reaching 99.5%. The coverage rate of the vaccine against invasive Neisseria meningitidis B disease (third dose) was 93.9%.

In children who have reached the age of 6 years, in 2021 there was a decrease in coverage for all types of vaccine administered compared to 2020. The decrease in the fifth dose of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines was 0.7 pp covering 96.4% of individuals in 2021. For the second dose of measles, epidemic parotitis and rubella vaccines, the decrease was 0.6 pp, to 97.0% in 2021. The coverage rate for the injectable inactivated polio vaccine (fifth dose) was 96.4%.

It should be noted that coverage rates may have been slightly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic: in 2021, vaccination coverage in children who had reached their first birthday was lower than in 2019 (-0.1 pp), except for the second dose of the 13-serotype Streptococcus Pneumoniae conjugate vaccine (+0.8 pp) and the third dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine (+0.1 pp). In the groups of children turning 2 years old and 6 years old the coverage in 2021 was higher than that recorded in 2019.
