In 2022
Deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 0.9%
1,742 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) were carried out in 2022 (twenty-three were twins’ births), representing a 0.9% increase over 2021 (1,727 deliveries). This growth signifies a reversal of the declining trend that commenced in 2018.

In the reference year, 78.1% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years, accounting for 1,360 deliveries. Mothers aged between 15 and 24 years constituted 12.5% of the deliveries (217), while mothers aged 40 years or older accounted for 9.5% (165). The percentage of births has been progressively increasing with the mother's age group. In 2022, the number of young mothers (under 25 years old) increased by 0.2 percentage points (pp) compared to 2021. The percentage of mothers aged 40 or over was 0.7 pp higher than the previous year. Notably, the age group that stands out is mothers aged between 27 and 37 years, representing 63.8% of the deliveries.
It is worth mentioning that 93.5% of pregnancies lasted 37 weeks or longer, while 5.2% had a duration of less than 37 weeks.
Regarding the distribution of deliveries among municipalities, Funchal accounted for the highest proportion with 41.4%, followed by Santa Cruz with 19.5% and Câmara de Lobos with 15.3%.
These newly released data will be incorporated into the publication "Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2022," which will be available in the first quarter of 2024.
