Hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira experienced a significant increase of 32.8% in the number of emergency services
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released today, on its website, the provisional data from the 2022 Hospital Survey and the final data from 2021.
The Hospital Survey data reveals that, in 2022, similar to 2021, there were 10 hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with 3 being public and 7 private, all located in the municipality of Funchal.
The average capacity in the reference year (arithmetic mean of the quarters) amounted to 2,098 beds (997 in public hospitals and 1,101 in private hospitals), reflecting a decrease of 3.0% compared to 2021 (a reduction of 65 beds). The bed ratio per 1,000 inhabitants decreased to 8.3 in 2022 (from 8.6 in 2021).
By the end of 2022, the hospital staff comprised 571 doctors, 1,497 nurses, 274 diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, and 1,527 auxiliary workers, totalling 5,014 healthcare professionals. When compared to 2021, the number of doctors increased by 1.8%, and nurses increased by 1.0%.
In 2022, there were 24.5 thousand hospitalisations, a decrease of 2.7% compared to 25.2 thousand in 2021, corresponding to 600.0 thousand days of hospitalisation.
A total of 319.1 thousand outpatient appointments were conducted in hospital outpatient units, representing a 9.8% decrease from 2021 (353.6 thousand consultations). It is noteworthy that the specialities of otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology experienced the most significant declines, decreasing by 17.3% and 15.2%, respectively. The highest increase occurred in the speciality of general surgery, rising from 19.6 thousand to 21.2 thousand consultations (+8.3%).
On average, around 45.8 surgeries (excluding minor surgeries) were performed daily in the ARM hospitals in 2022, with 32.2 taking place in public hospitals. The overall average represents a 3.5 surgeries per day decrease from 2021 (49.3).
In the emergency services of the ARM hospitals, 157.1 thousand emergency attendances were recorded, indicating a substantial increase of 32.8% compared to 2021 (118.3 thousand visits). Approximately 77.3% of the emergency attendances in 2022 occurred in public hospitals.
