Autonomous Region of Madeira held a ratio of nurses per thousand inhabitants higher than that of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the Country
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in association with the celebration of International Nurses Day, compiles a set of statistical information already available on its website regarding these professionals. For the first time, the registered and active specialist nurses in the Order of Nurses, working in the Region, are also released, by speciality practised, as well as the number of graduates in nursing courses from higher education in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) (1st cycle degrees and integrated 2nd cycle master's degrees), by gender.
In 2022, there were 2,551 nurses registered in the Order of Nurses practising in the ARM, resulting in an average of 10.1 nurses per thousand inhabitants in the Region, a ratio higher than that of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (9.8) and the Country (7.8). This group of health professionals was predominantly composed of women, representing 82.6% of the total nurses in the ARM. In the Region, 68.5% of nurses were generalists and 31.5% specialists.
The provisional data from the Hospital Survey show that, at the end of 2022, the staff working in hospitals consisted of 1,497 nurses, representing approximately 30% of the total professionals employed (5,014).
At the end of 2020, the staff working in the Primary Health Care Units of the ARM consisted of 621 nurses, corresponding to 35.0% of the professionals working there.
In 2022, there were 200 births with assistance from midwife nurses in parturient residing in the ARM, and one birth by a non-midwife nurse, representing 11.5% of the total births in that year (1,742).
