In 2023
Number of births among mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased by 0.5%
In 2023, a total of 1,733 births were recorded among mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 19 of which were twin births. This represents a decrease of 0.5% compared to 2022, which had 1,742 births. This decline contrasts with the increase observed in 2022, the only year to show a rise in births since 2018, though the number of births in 2023 remains higher than that of 2021, which had 1,727 births.

In the reference year, 77.8% of births were of mothers aged between 25 and 39 years (1,348 births), 13.0% were of mothers aged between 15 and 24 years (226 births), and 9.2% were of mothers aged 40 or older (159 births). The analysis of the existing series, which began in 2003, clearly shows a trend over the past 21 years of a decrease in births among younger women and an increase among women aged 40 or older. In 2003, 23.9% of births were of women aged 24 or younger, while 4.6% were to women aged 40 or older.
Notably, 94.3% of pregnancies with known duration lasted between 37 and 41 weeks, while 5.7% corresponded to gestations shorter than 37 weeks. Additionally, in six births, the pregnancy duration ranged between 22 and 27 weeks.
The municipalities with the highest proportion of births were Funchal (39.6%), followed by Santa Cruz (19.2%), Câmara de Lobos (15.1%), and Ponta do Sol (6.3%).
The data provided are part of the "2023 Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira " publication, the full edition of which will be released in the first quarter of 2025.
