In 2023

Vaccine Inoculation coverage in the Autonomous Region of Madeira ranged between 94.2% and 99.0%

In the recommended vaccine inoculations schedule, in 2023, coverage in children who reached 1 year of age ranged between 98.5% (for most vaccines) and 99.0% (for the second doses of the vaccine against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis B). In this age group, coverage for the vaccine against infections by Streptococcus pneumoniae of 13 serotypes increased by 1.5 percentage points (pp) compared to 2022, and the vaccine against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis B (second doses) rose by 1.3 pp. For the remaining vaccines, coverage was very similar to the previous year, with all registering an increase of 0.1 pp.

Vaccine inoculations coverage among children who reached 2 years of age declined across all vaccines, ranging in 2023 between 94.2% and 98.4%. Below the target of 95% coverage were the fourth doses of the inoculations against invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and poliomyelitis, all of which recorded a coverage rate of 94.2% (95.9% in 2022). The vaccines against infections by Streptococcus pneumoniae of 13 serotypes had a coverage rate of 96.4% (97.5% in 2022), the vaccines against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis B (third doses) reached 96.7% (97.9% in 2022), and the vaccines against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis C (single dose) recorded a coverage rate of 97.9% (98.5% in 2022). For the remaining vaccines, the coverage rate fell by 0.4 pp compared to 2022, reaching 98.4%.

Among children who reached 6 years of age, a decrease in coverage was also observed in 2023 across all administered vaccine inoculation types compared to 2022. The reduction in the fifth dose of the vaccine inoculations against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis was 0.4 pp, covering 94.4% of persons in 2023. The second dose of the vaccine inoculations against measles, mumps and rubella saw a decline of 0.9 pp, resulting in 94.8% coverage in 2023. Coverage of the inactivated injectable poliomyelitis inoculation (fifth dose) was 94.4%.

Also reported, for the year 2020, is the vaccine inoculations coverage of children who reached 11 years of age. In this cohort, compared to 2019, the first dose of the vaccines against infections by human papillomavirus increased by 1.3 pp, reaching 96.3%. Coverage for the second doses of the same vaccine stood at 87.1%, representing a decrease of 0.6 pp compared to 2019.
