Hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira carried out more appointments and surgeries, but hospitalisations declined
Provisional results from the Hospital Survey conducted in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) show that, in 2024, as in 2023, there were 10 hospitals operating in the ARM, three public and seven private, all located in the municipality of Funchal.
The average number of inpatient beds available in the reference year (calculated as the arithmetic mean of the quarterly figures) amounted to 2 097 beds (994 in public hospitals and 1 103 in private hospitals), representing an increase of 1.5% compared with 2023 (31 additional beds). The ratio of inpatient beds per 1 000 inhabitants stood at 8.1 in 2024, remaining unchanged from 2023.
In 2024, a total of 25.8 thousand hospitalisations were recorded, representing a decrease of 4.4% compared with the 27.0 thousand recorded in 2023. However, 604.7 thousand inpatient days were registered, corresponding to an increase of 3.4% compared with the previous year.
In the same year, 392.5 thousand appointments were carried out in hospital outpatient units, an increase of 5.0% compared with the 374.0 thousand appointments recorded in 2023. Among surgical specialties, Otorhinolaryngology stood out, with an increase of 32.7% and a total of 19.9 thousand appointments. In medical specialties, Endocrinology recorded a rise of 23.3% (10 615 appointments), while Dentistry increased from 2 252 appointments in 2023 to 5 392 in 2024.
On average, approximately 62.9 surgeries per day were performed in hospitals in the ARM in 2024 (excluding minor surgeries), of which 44.2 took place in public hospitals. This overall daily average represents an increase of 12.4 surgeries per day compared with 2023 (50.5).
Hospital emergency service in the ARM recorded 162.4 thousand attendances, corresponding to an increase of 2.6% compared with the 158.3 thousand attendances registered in 2023. Approximately 74.8% of these attendances occurred in public hospitals.
