In the first eight months of 2021

Commercialisation of banana decreased by 6.0% compared to the same period of 2020

According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), in the first eight months of 2021, 12,807.9 tonnes of banana produced in Madeira were commercialised, down by 824.3 tonnes when compared to the same period of 2020. Of that total, 84.0% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal.

This decrease of 6.0% was shared by all classes. Compared to the same eight-month period in 2020, the Extra category decreased by 5.1%, Class I by -14.0% and Class II by -1.4%.

It should be noted that of the total sold, 79.7% belonged to the extra category (79.0% in the same period of 2020).

Despite the drop compared to the same month last year, the highest value of commercialized banana was recorded in July (2,200.4 tonnes) and the lowest in February (885.4 tonnes).
