In the 1st quarter of 2025
Banana sales decreased by 5.9% year-on-year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will, from this edition onwards, publish data on banana commercialised in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) on a quarterly basis, replacing the previous four-monthly periodicity.
According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), in the first three months of 2025, 4 393.7 tonnes of bananas were commercialised in the ARM, a decrease of 273.2 tonnes compared to the same period last year (-5.9%). Of this total, 78.6% was shipped (compared to 79.6% in the 1st quarter of 2024), with the mainland being the main destination.
Compared to the same period in 2024, all classes recorded decreases. Extra class of bananas fell by 3.2%, class I dropped by 16.9%, and class II declined by 12.2%.
It is worth noting that, during the reference quarter, the extra class of bananas accounted for 81.4% of the total bananas commercialised, up from 79.2% in the same period last year, representing an increase in their share by 2.2 percentage points.
January was the month with the highest volume of bananas commercialised in the 1st quarter of 2025, totalling 1 722.8 tonnes, and was the only month to register year-on-year growth (+5.7%). March had the lowest volume, with 1 293.1 tonnes, down 19.6% compared to March 2024.
