In the 1st semester of 2025
Egg production, livestock slaughtering, and landed catch increased year-on-year, while poultry meat and aquaculture production declined
According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the Region, egg production during the first semester of 2025 amounted to approximately 17.6 million units, representing an 8.7% year-on-year increase.
During the same period, poultry meat registered a 7.7% year-on-year decline, totalling 1 667.3 tonnes.
When narrowing the scope of the analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2025, both egg production and livestock slaughtering increased year-on-year by 13.1% and 0.8%, respectively.
According to information provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), livestock slaughtering between January and June 2025 totalled approximately 368.6 tonnes, reflecting a 1.9% year-on-year increase, which was mainly driven by developments in the 2nd quarter of 2025, with a 4.5% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
With respect to the fishing sector, data gathered from the Regional Directorate for Fisheries indicate that the first semester of 2025 was marked by a year-on-year increase of 8.3% in the volume of landed catch, amounting to approximately 2 217.1 tonnes. A similar trend was observed in the first-sale value, which rose 0.7% year-on-year, reaching a semester total of 10.5 million euros. In the 2nd quarter of 2025, the volume increased by 35.8% and the value by 26.9%, compared with the same quarter of 2024.
Breaking down by species, the catch of tuna and similar species increased by 86.7% in volume and 44.7% in first-sale value, compared to the first six months of 2024. In contrast, the catch of black scabbardfish declined both in volume (-11.1%) and in first-sale value (-11.9%). Nevertheless, black scabbardfish remained the most abundant species in the first half of 2025, accounting for 54.9% of the total catch, followed by tuna and similar species with 42.3%.
The average first-sale price of fish during the reference period (excluding self-consumption landings) was 4.80 euros, compared to 5.17 euros in the same period of 2024. The average price for tuna and similar species stood at 4.20 euros (5.43 euros in the same period of the previous year), and for black scabbardfish, 5.02 euros (5.05 euros in the first semester of 2024).
Aquaculture production declined by 0.7% year-on-year
According to data gathered by DREM from aquaculture producers in the Region, aquaculture production in the first semester of 2025 totalled 686.3 tonnes of seabream, corresponding to a year-on-year decrease of 0.7%. Conversely, sales revenue reached 4.4 million euros, representing an increase of 1.0% compared to the same semester in 2024.
Regarding markets, it is noteworthy that 85.8% of the sales value corresponded to the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores), while only 14.0% pertained to the regional market.
In the 2nd quarter of 2025, the year-on-year change in volume produced and sales value was +34.9% and +42.7%, respectively.
