Reduction in the disposal of inert waste led to a decrease of 3.9% in the overall waste production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
According to an estimate provided by the Regional Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DRAAC), the total waste production in 2022 in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) amounted to approximately 238.8 thousand tonnes, down by 9.8 thousand tonnes (-3.9%) compared to the previous year. This reduction is primarily attributed to a decrease in inert waste deposition on the island of Madeira, which decreased by 24.5%. Excluding this type of waste from the entire archipelago, the overall waste production in the Region would have increased by 6.0%.
A significant portion of the total production is related to waste sent to the Meia Serra Waste Treatment Plant, totalling approximately 140.5 thousand tonnes. This marks an increase of +5.9% compared to the previous year. Notably, there were increases in waste deposited in landfills (+16.3%) and waste incineration (+5.8%).
On the other hand, waste destined for recycling/recovery outside of the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached approximately 32.9 thousand tonnes, marking a +12.6% increase compared to the previous year. Significant growth was observed in car batteries (+43.6%), glass (+24.9%), cardboard (+20.9%), and plastic and metal packaging materials (+19.4%). However, it's worth noting reductions in tires (-25.2%), batteries (-17.5%), and waste from electrical and electronic equipment (-16.6%).
Recycling efforts on the island of Madeira totalled 1.8 thousand tonnes, representing a remarkable increase of +167.9% compared to 2021. There is a notable emphasis on the recovery of construction and demolition waste (CDW) and used tires in civil construction works, amounting to 1,537.6 tonnes (+1,516.4 tonnes compared to 2021).
