DREM releases Environmental Statistics
Data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira for the year 2013 show that the distributed water through the public water system stood at 26,1 million cubic metres, +0,3% than in 2012. 55.2% of that total was for household consumption (57.9% in 2012).
In 2013, the global production of solid waste in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 157.4 thousand tons, 17.7 thousand tons less than in the previous year. 19.0% of the waste was destined for recycling (17.8% in 2012).
The consolidated expenditure of the Regional Government of Madeira in environmental management and protection was 82.6 million euros, 80.8% of which destined to the “Protection and remediation of soil, groundwater and surface water” (72.8% in 2012).
In 2013, there were 653 firemen in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (38 less than in 2012), who provided 35,802 services, 69.6% of which were related to health/prehospital situations.
In 2013 compared to 2012, there was less rainfall both in Funchal (495 mm in 2013 and 528 mm in 2012) and in Porto Santo (348 mm in 2013 and 554 mm in 2012). The average temperatures in 2013 were also lower than in 2012. In Funchal the average maximum temperature was 22.8ºC, down by 0.5ºC over 2012. The average minimum temperature dropped from 17.5ºC in 2012 to 17.3ºC in 2013.
DREM releases Time Series on Environmental Statistics for the 1989-2013 period
DREM also releases today on its website, the Time Series on Environmental Statistics, updated with the data for 2013.
The series contains data about water supply, water treatment and drainage, solid waste, expenditures of the regional and local scope entities in environmental management and protection by economic aggregate and domain. Data on air quality, weather, forestry fires and firemen are also provided.
