In the 1st quarter of 2022

“Madeira” Wine sales in quantity and value grew year-on-year

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 662.2 thousand litres in the first quarter of 2022, which resulted in the first sale receipts of 5.0 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there were increases of 7.3% and 39.6% in quantity and value, respectively.

Exports to EU countries were around 332.8 thousand litres, generating sale receipts of 1.6 million euros, which represents year-on-year changes of -8.6% in volume and +2.9% in value, by the same order. Sales on the national market exceeded 106.7 thousand litres and yielded around 920.5 thousand euros, of which 84.3 thousand litres and 694.3 thousand euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This increase is related to the growth in tourism activity in the Autonomous Regional da Madeira in the first quarter of 2022, compared to with the corresponding period of 2021, reflected by the growth of overnight stays in tourist accommodation by +467.7%. In turn, exports to third countries reached 222.7 thousand litres, generating an income of 2.5 million euros, which represents increases of 8.6% and 46.3%, respectively.

Within the European Union (EU) countries, sales to Spain (+197.3% in quantity and +385.7% in value), the Netherlands (+93.9%; +145.5%) and Luxemburg (+70.0%; +42.4%) were particularly noteworthy. On the negative side, the German market showed sales reductions, with changes of -30.3% and -28.2% in quantity and value, respectively. Within the EU, the most important market continues to be France, which registered a growth of 1.0% in quantity and 14.5% in value.

In extra-EU markets, Japan (+107.5% in quantity and +108.4% in value), United Kingdom (+26.2%; +42.1%) and Switzerland (+17.7%; +189.7%) were the most important markets, while China (-9.6%; -35.6%) was the least important. Exports to the United States fell in volume (-12.9%) but rose in value (+68.3%).

Of the total traded, 72.9% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 9,33 euros/litre (6,98 euros/litre in the first quarter of 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.70 euros/litre (0.23 euros/litre more than in the same period of the previous year).

In 2021, sales of spirits, wine with DO "Madeirense" and GI "Terras Madeirenses" increased in volume and value

Spirits produced and bottled in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totaled 796,000 litres in 2021, an increase of 29.1% over the previous year.  All types of spirits recorded growth, except for "Geneva", highlighting "Madeira Rum" (+26.2%) and Liqueurs (+33.5%. In 2021 "Rum da Madeira" represented around two-thirds (65.7%) of the quantities produced and bottled, while liqueurs concentrated close to one-third (32.7%), half of which is "Poncha da Madeira".

As regards the marketing of these drinks (considering only what results from regional production), its total was around 905.4 thousand litres (+42.7% than in 2020), generating 5.6 million euros (+47.8% than in the previous year) in the first sale receipts. 86.0% of the sales volume and 85.0% of the sales value were made in the Region.

In foreign markets, France stands out, exporting 53.3 thousand litres of "Rum da Madeira", with a value of 316.2 thousand euros. Of what is exported abroad, France concentrated 75.2% of the quantity and 63.5% of the value.

In terms of the bottling of wine with Denomination of Origin (DO) "Madeirense" and wine with Geographical Indication (GI) "Terras Madeirenses", a drop of 28.8% and 41.1% compared to 2020 was recorded, respectively, not exceeding 65.3 thousand litres and 9.9 thousand litres.

In 2021, the commercialisation of wine with DO "Madeirense" (excluding sparkling wine) was around 74.9 thousand litres representing a value of 648.8 thousand euros, a growth of 114.6% and 143.9%, respectively, when compared to the previous year. In the wine with GI "Terras Madeirenses", sales were of 12.7 thousand litres, corresponding to 77.9 thousand euros (+146.3% and +167.8% respectively). Note, however, that in both types of wine, the figures for 2021 were below those of 2019.

Regarding the commercialisation of these wines, the regional market concentrated 71.8% of the quantity and 69.2% of the first sale value. It should be noted that, in the national market, the quantity sold increased by 13.2% of the volume and 17.4% of the value. The United States of America was the main international market, importing 10.9% of the total quantity sold (8.5% in value).

In the year in reference, analysing the marketing of wine with the DO "Madeirense", it was found that the best-selling wines were white wines (49.8% in volume and 57.5% in value), followed by rosé wines (28.9% in volume and 18.4% in value) and red wines (21.3% in volume and 24.1% in value). For wines with GI "Terras Madeirenses", it was recorded that white wines (46.3% in volume and 44.3% in value) were the most traded, followed by red wines (44.0% in volume and 46.5% in value) and rosé wines (9.7% in volume and 9.1% in value).
