Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine in quantity and value grew year-on-year
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 779.8 thousand litres in the second quarter of 2022, which resulted in the first sale receipts of 5.0 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there were increases of 16.4% and 30.5% in quantity and value, respectively.
Exports to EU countries were around 375.7 thousand litres, generating sale receipts of 1.6 million euros, which represents year-on-year changes of +0.4% in volume and +1.6% in value, by the same order. Sales on the national market exceeded 167.4 thousand litres and yielded more than 1.3 million euros, of which 127.8 thousand litres and 1.0 million euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Regional da Madeira. In turn, exports to third countries reached 236.7 thousand litres, generating a revenue of 2.1 million euros, representing an increase of 6.5% and 27.8%, respectively.
Within the European Union (EU) countries, sales to Germany were particularly noteworthy (+60.7% in quantity and +40.3% in value). On the negative side, the French market showed a reduction (-5.1% in quantity and -10.7% in value) – being still the most important market of the EU – and the same was true for Belgium (-60.1%; -46.4%) and Sweden (-24.2%; -7.2%). It should also be noted that, in the Mainland Portugal market, the quantity sold increased by 32.0% and in value by 0.8%.
In extra-EU markets, United States (+69.9% in quantity and +126.8% in value), Japan (+13.1%; +3.0%), Canada (+38.5%; +64.0%), Switzerland (+246.5%; +314.6%) and China (+110.5%; +82.4%) were the most important markets, while, on the contrary United Kingdom (-66.1%; -64.4. %) had a negative performance.
Of the total traded, 72.5% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 7.84 euros/litre (6.88 euros/litre in the second quarter of 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.78 euros/litre (0.12 euros/litre more than in the same period of the previous year).

Extending the analysis to the first six months of the year, the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine exceeded 1.4 million litres, generating 10.0 million euros in first sale revenue. Compared to the same period in 2021, both the quantity sold and the value of the first sale show positive year-on-year changes of 12.0% and 34.9%.
From January to June 2022, exports to European Union countries amounted to 708.5 thousand litres and generated more than 3.1 million euros. Sales to Sweden, showed an increase in volume sold (+0.7%) and in revenue generated (+39.1%), the same happening in the case of the Netherlands (+37.8% in quantity and +39.6% in value). France showed a decrease with a drop in volume (-2.5%) and in value (-1.2%).
When compared to the 1st half of 2021, the extra-EU market had an increase of +7.5% in quantities sold and 37.2% in revenue. United States (+24.9% in quantity and +90.6% in value) and Japan (+44.5%; +38.3%), were the most important markets. On the negative side, United Kingdom ( -32.2% in quantity and -28.1% in value) showed a reduction.
Sales on the national market reached 274.1 thousand litres and generated more than 2.3 million euros, of which 212.1 thousand litres and 1.7 million euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Regional da Madeira.
Of the total traded in this period, 72.7% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 8.52 euros/litre (6.93 euros/litre in the 2nd half of 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.74 euros/litre (up by 0.17 euros/litre over the same period last year).
