Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine increased by 8.4% in value despite the drop of 2.7% in volume

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 3.1 million litres in 2022, which resulted in first sale receipts of 21.0 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there was a drop in volume of 2.7%, but an increase of 8.4% in value. The sales value of Madeira Wine for 2022 is the highest ever and even discounting inflation, in other words, nullifying the effect of price increase, this is a new high since 2002.

In 2022, the national market showed a positive trend, rising by 35.4% in quantity and by 41.9% in value, when compared to 2021. Thus, sales on the national market reached 583.4 thousand litres and yielded a value of approximately 5.3 million euros, of which 463.9 thousand litres and 4.1 million euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Exports to European Union countries amounted to around 1.5 million litres, generating 6.9 million euros, which represent year-on-year changes of -6.7% in volume and of -1.9% in value. Exports to the extra-EU market totalled 933.3 thousand litres, and generated 8.8 million euros in revenue, representing a 11.9% drop in volume but a 2.3% increase in value.

Within the European Union (EU) countries, sales to the French market - which continues to be the most important market within the group of EU countries - showed a slight drop, with changes of -3.1% and -2.4%, in volume and value, respectively. Also, Germany (-13.2%; -12.0%) and Belgium (-25.9%; -6.7%), two other important markets, showed the same trend, with a drop in sales to these markets.

In the extra-EU market, Japan showed a robust growth (+20.8% in quantity and +25.2% in value) in contrast to the United Kingdom (-31.6%; -15.7%). The American market remains the most important market, in terms of value traded (+11.3%), but exports to this country dropped in volume (-15.6%).

Of the total traded, 74.2% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 8.29 euros/litre (7.25 euros/litre in 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.72 euros/litre (0.04 euros/litre more than in the same period last year), extending the trend already seen in the previous quarter.

Focusing the analysis on the 4th quarter of the year, the volume of marketed “Madeira” wine was 916.4 thousand litres, generating approximately 5.9 million euros in first sale revenues. Compared to the same period in 2021, both the volume sold (-15.1%) and the value of the first sale receipts (-10.6%), show negative year-on-year changes.

In 2022, sales of spirits, wine with DO "Madeirense" and GI "Terras Madeirenses" increased in both volume and value

Spirits produced and bottled in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 1,168.8 thousand litres, in 2022, an increase of 40.3% over the previous year. All types of spirits recorded growth, except for "Gin", highlighting "Madeira Rum" (+28.1%), “Distilled Gin” (+43.8%) and Liqueurs (+65.7%). In terms of shares, "Rum da Madeira" represented, in 2022, 60.0% of the quantities produced and bottled, while the liqueurs concentrated 38.6%, of which 55.2% is from "Poncha da Madeira".

As regards the marketing of these drinks (considering only what results from regional production), its total was around 1,102.7 thousand litres (+21.8% than in 2021), generating 7.4 million euros (+31.4% than the previous year) in first sale receipts. 88.4% of the sales volume and 87.5% of the sales value were made in the Region.

In foreign markets, France stands out, where 30.2 thousand litres of "Rum da Madeira" were exported, resulting in a value of 212.5 thousand euros. Of what is exported abroad, France concentrated 45.3% of the quantity and 41.9% of the value.

In terms of the bottling of wine with Denomination of Origin (DO) "Madeirense" and wine with Geographical Indication (IG) "Terras Madeirenses", there was an increase of 128.3% and a drop of 12.8% in quantities, compared to 2021, respectively, reaching 149.1 thousand litres (an all-time high) and 8.6 thousand litres.

In 2022, the commercialisation of wine with DO "Madeirense" (excluding sparkling wine) was around 132.5 thousand litres, representing a value of 1,211.4 thousand euros, which translates into a growth of 77.0% and 86.7%, respectively, when compared with the previous year. In the wine with GI "Terras Madeirenses", sales were of 13.1 thousand litres, corresponding to 81.6 thousand euros (+2.9% and +4.9% respectively)

Regarding the commercialisation of these wines, the regional market accounted for 67.9% of the quantity and 62.0% of the first sale value. The national market accounted for 13.5% of the volume (21.4% of the value). The United States of America was the main international market, importing 12.8% of the total quantity sold (8.9% of the value).

In the year in reference, analysing the sales of wine with the DO "Madeirense", it was found that the best-selling wines were white wines (45.6% in volume and 54.1% in value), followed by rosé wines (33.7% in volume and 18.5% in value) and red wines (20.7% in volume and 27.4% in value). As for wines with GI "Terras Madeirenses", it was recorded that white wines (50.3% in volume and 49.3% in value) were the most traded, followed by red wines (48.5% in volume and 49.5% in value) and rosé wines (1.2% in volume and also in value).

Madeira Embroidery Certification decreased compared to 2021

In 2022, the Madeira embroidery certification originated a first sale revenue of approximately 489.0 thousand Euros,  dropping by 4.3% when compared with 2021.

In the year under review, of the total certified by IVBAM, 79.2% corresponded to exports to European Union (EU) countries, third countries, and Mainland Portugal. In 2021, it had been 76.3%.

In the European Union market, Italy is the main European market, with sales that were around 36.0 thousand euros, and despite the drop compared to 2021, which had been 37.1 thousand euros, it continues to be the main European market.

In the Extra-EU market, the United States was the main market, with sales of 295.3 thousand euros, corresponding to 76.2% of total exports, followed by the United Kingdom, where the sales to this market exceeded 35.6 thousand euros.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira market suffered a drop in sales, which stood at 101.5 thousand euros, 19.8 thousand euros lower than in the previous year.
