In the 3rd quarter of 2022
Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine fell year-on-year in quantity and value
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 698.1 thousand litres in the third quarter of 2022, which resulted in first sale receipts of 5.1 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there were drops of 10.0% and 5.2% in quantity and value, respectively.
In the third quarter, only sales on the national market partially offset the drop registered in the intra and extra-EU markets, which due to their importance, determined the overall drop. Thus, sales on the national market were around 137.9 thousand litres (up to 44.1% on the same period in the previous year) and generated more than 1.3 million euros (+49.8%), of which 111.9 thousand litres and 1.1 million euros came from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Within the European Union (EU) countries, sales to the French market - which continues to be the most important market within the group of EU countries - fell by 30.4% and 26.1% in quantity and value, respectively, as did sales to Denmark (-4.7% and -23.9%). There were also decreases in volume but increases in value in Germany (-0.5%; +8.4%) and Belgium (-50.9%; +53.4%).
In extra-EU markets, Japan had the best performance (+42.0% in quantity and +58.2% in value) and the United States the worst (-49.3%; -39.4%).
Of the total traded, 78.5% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 8.47 euros/litre (8.02 euros/litre in the third quarter of 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.88 euros/litre (up by 0.13 euros/litre over the same period of the previous year).

Extending the analysis to the first nine months of the year, the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine showed a positive balance, exceeding 2.1 million litres, generating 15.1 million euros in first sale revenues. Compared to the same period in 2021, both the quantity sold and the value of the first sale show positive year-on-year changes of 3.8% and 18.1%.
From January to September 2022, exports to European Union countries amounted to 1.0 million litres and generated 4.7 million euros, down by 11.1% and 2.1%, respectively. The most important markets were the Netherlands (+32.8% in volume and +25.7% in value) and Belgium (-41.0%; -1.7%). France was the main market, registering changes of -12.4% and -10.6% in quantity and value, respectively.
In the Portuguese and extra-EU markets, the changes were positive and offset the drop in the intra-EU market. Thus, the Portuguese market saw the quantity sold increase by 89.8% and the value by 90.6% driven by sales in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
When compared with the same period of the previous year, the extra-EU market had an increase of 1.5% in quantities sold and 11.27% in revenue. Japan (+43.6% in quantity and +45.0% in value), Switzerland (+32.5%; +117.4%) had good performances, while the United Kingdom did not (-18.8%; -13.8%). In the United States (-0.5%; +31.2%) and China (+29.8%; -21.5%), the changes were mixed.
