In the 3rd quarter of 2017
Aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 5.1%
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the third quarter of 2017 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 5.1% compared with the same period of the previous year (below the 5.6% increase registered in Portugal. In the aforementioned period, the cash withdrawals decreased by 1.4% while the purchases through ATP rose by 10.3%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 5.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase.
International cards were used to withdraw 21.1 million Euros (10.9% y-o-y decrease) while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 155.8 million Euros, almost the same when compared with the corresponding period of 2016.
At the country level, national withdrawals rose by 0.3% and the international withdrawals decreased by 1.7%. The y-o-y increase of total withdrawals was 0.1%.
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the third quarter 2017 was higher in Madeira (+10.3%) than in Portugal (+9.9%). In the region, the purchases through APT using national cards increased by 8.0% while those using international cards rose by 18.0%.

Between January and September 2017, the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through ATP grew by 6.1% in Madeira and by 6.5% in Portugal, vis-à-vis the same period of 2016.
