In the 1st quarter of 2015

Withdrawals together with the purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 0.7%

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the first quarter of 2015 show that the cash withdrawals together with  the purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 0.7% compared with the same period of the previous year (below the +5.4% increase registered in Portugal). While the cash withdrawals fell by 4.5%, the purchases through ATP rose by 6.2%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 9.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) decrease.

Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, we can see that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 16.0 million Euros  (6.9% y-o-y increase), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 134.2 million Euros, down by 5.7% when compared with the corresponding period of 2014.

At the country level, the rates of change were higher in all cases. International withdrawals rose by 17.2% while the national withdrawals increased by 0.6%. The y-o-y average growth in withdrawals was 1.5%.

Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the first quarter 2015 was higher in Portugal (+9.2%) than in Madeira (+6.2%).
