In the 1st quarter of 2026,

Aggregate value of cash withdrawals and purchases through SIBS network automatic payment terminals grew by 3.6% year-on-year

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, referring to the 1st quarter of 2026, indicate that the amounts relating to the two main operations of the SIBS network — cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) — considered in aggregate, reached 710.7 million euros (2.7% of the national total), representing an increase of 3.6% compared to the same period of the previous year (+4.5% nationally). This growth was driven primarily by the 5.7% rise recorded in purchases through APT (+7.7% nationally), given that cash withdrawals posted a year-on-year decrease of 2.7% (-4.3% nationally).

By card origin, it should be noted that the overall increase mentioned above resulted from the 4.8% year-on-year growth observed in transactions with national cards, as international cards recorded a decrease of 0.9%. At the national level, the changes were +4.8% and +1.1%, respectively.

Breaking down cash withdrawals into national and international, it can be observed that, in the 1st quarter of the current year, the former totalled 153.1 million euros, while the latter amounted to 12.7 million euros, representing year-on-year changes of -2.0% and -10.6%, respectively.

In turn, purchases through APT made with national cards stood at around 410.6 million euros, an increase of 7.6% compared to the 1st quarter of 2025, while those made with international cards reached 134.2 million euros, equivalent to a growth of 0.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Analysing total purchases by purchasing method — in-person and online — year-on-year changes were +6.9% and -12.6%, respectively, with online purchases accounting for only 5.2% of the total.

In the 1st quarter of 2026, purchases made through APT were concentrated mainly in the sectors of "Wholesale and retail trade" (58.8% of the total) and "Accommodation and food service activities" (21.2% of the total). In these sectors, year-on-year increases of 8.5% and 1.8% were recorded, respectively.
