Employment and turnover of the Retail Trade sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased
In 2014, there were 83 retail trade establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira classified as relevant size units (the same as in 2013), 67.5% of which dedicated to the non retail sale of food (or without predominance in retail sale of food) and the remaining specialised in the retail sale of food (or with predominance in retail sale of food).
In 2014, these units employed 2.5 thousand persons - down by 21.8% from 2013 (3.2 thousand persons in 2013) - the majority of which (68.2%) working in food retail. There were more women (71.1%) than men employed in the sector, both in the retail sale of food (72.0%) and in the non retail sale of food segment (69.4%).
This sector generated a turnover of 352.1 million euros in 2014 (down by 4.6% from 2013), 99.8% of which coming from the sale of goods and the rest from services to customers. Approximately 73.6% (258.5 million euros) of the total amount of sale of goods (351.4 million euros) derived from the food retail, of which 82.6% (213.6 million euros) came from the sales of “Food products, beverages and tobacco”.
In 2014, sales coming from own-brand products reached 129.2 million euros (140.5 million euros in 2013), 63.5% of which coming from the retail sale of food.
Concerning the means of payment used, the available data show that cash payments were the most frequent in the retail sale of food (53.1%). In the non retail sale of food, the debit or credits card were the preferred means of payment (59.6%).
