DREM releases the “International Trade Statistics-2018” publication
DREM releases today the annual publication “International Trade Statistics” (only available in Portuguese) which includes the provisional data for the year of 2018. The publication tables also include the final results for 2016 and 2017.
Summary of the main indicators
In 2018, the trade balance of goods of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 54.9 million Euros. In the previous year, the trade surplus had stood at 4.1 million Euros.
In the reference year, exports totalled 228.9 million Euros while imports topped 174.0 million Euros. From 2017 to 2018, both exports and imports increased by 49.4% and 16.7%, respectively. Madeira had a foreign trade surplus with Third Countries (120.2 million Euros) and a deficit with the INTRA-EU countries (-65.3 million Euros).
Exports for INTRA-EU countries increased from 48.2 million Euros in 2017 to 88.2 million Euros in 2018, while imports from those countries increased from 130.8 million Euros in 2017 to 153.5 million Euros in 2018.
There was a increase in the trade with Third Countries, since exports rose from 105.0 in 2017 to 140.7 million Euros in 2018, while in the same order, imports from those countries went up from 18.4 to 20.5 million Euros.
It should be highlighted that the companies licensed by the Madeira International Business Center (IBC) were responsible for 197.7 million Euros of exports in 2018, a higher value than the 130.4 million Euros of the previous year. The share of exports made by those companies was 86.4% in 2018 (85.1% in 2017).
Regarding imports by companies licensed by the IBC, the value of goods purchased from foreign companies in 2018 topped 68.6 million Euros (56.8 million Euros in the previous year). This growth implied an increase in the share of imports made by companies licensed by the IBC, from 38.1% in 2017 to 39.4% in 2018.
