DREM releases the “International Trade Statistics-2019” publication
DREM releases today the annual publication “International Trade Statistics” (only available in Portuguese) which includes the provisional data for the year of 2019. The publication tables also include the final results for 2017 and 2018.
Summary of the main indicators
In 2019, the trade balance of goods of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 100.0 million Euros. It is the 3rd consecutive surplus, which in 2019 was even more pronounced. In the previous year, the trade surplus stood at 50.4 million Euros and in 2017 at 4.1 million Euros.
In the reference year, exports totalled 272.1 million Euros while imports stood at 172.1 million Euros. Between 2018 and 2019, exports increased by 18.5% and imports decreased by 4.0%.
Exports for INTRA-EU countries increased from 88.9 million Euros in 2018 to 152.5 million Euros in 2019, while imports from those countries decreased from 158.1 million Euros in 2018 to 152.6 million Euros in 2019.
There was a decrease in the trade with Third Countries, since exports rose from 140.8 in 2018 to 119.5 million Euros in 2019, while in the same order, imports from those countries went down from 21.2 million Euros to 19.5 million Euros.
It should be highlighted that the companies licensed by the Madeira International Business Center (IBC) were responsible for 196.4 million Euros of exports in 2019, close to the 197.1 million Euros of the previous year. The share of exports made by those companies was 72.2% (85.5% in 2018).
Regarding imports by companies licensed by the IBC, the value of goods purchased from foreign companies in 2019 stood at 64.2 million Euros (73.5 million Euros in the previous year). This result means that the share of imports made by companies licensed by the IBC dropped from 41.0% in 2018 to 37.3% in 2019.
