DREM releases the “International Trade Statistics-2020” publication

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the annual publication of  “International Trade Statistics” which includes the final data for the year 2020. The tables also include the results for 2019.

In the publication of “International Trade in Goods”, the regional information is presented regarding trade in goods with the European Union and Third Countries, based on data declared by companies based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Information has been included on exports and imports (in both cases broke down into intra and extra-EU) by:

- Product group

- Section and chapter of the Combined Nomenclature (CN)

- Classification by Broad Economic Categories (CGCE)

- Classification of Products by Activities (CPA)

- Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-Rev. 3)

- Ranking of the main countries with which the Autonomous Region of Madeira trades

- Ranking of the main groups of traded products.

Region had a positive balance of trade with foreign countries for the fourth consecutive year

In 2020, the trade balance of goods of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 18.1 million Euros. In the previous year, the trade surplus had stood at 100.0 million Euros.

The analysis by type of flow shows that exports fell by 1.4% in 2020, in overall terms, to 268.3 million Euros, down by 3.8 million Euros over the previous year. The slight decrease in exports was essentially determined by the drop in exports to Intra-EU countries, which were around 133.7 million Euros in 2020, a smaller value compared to the 146.8 million Euros recorded in 2019. Traded goods with Extra-EU countries rose from 125.3 million Euros in 2019 to 134.6 million Euros in 2020, an insufficient increase to offset the drop in the Intra-EU component.

Imports topped 250.2 million Euros,  showing a growth of 45.4% in 2020, i.e., an increase of 78.1 million Euros. This growth is essentially explained by the acquisition of telephones for cellular networks or other wireless networks from Hong-Kong and China and of a tanker to the United Kingdom (country considered in the Extra-EU group) by two companies registered in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC).

The large increase in imports of goods is thus explained by transactions with non-EU countries, which reached 119.4 million Euros in 2020, 93.0 million Euros above the figure recorded in the previous year. In turn, purchases made from Intra-EU countries decreased from 145.7 million Euros in 2019 to 130.8 million Euros in 2020.

According to the analysis done by DREM, the companies licensed in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC) were responsible for exports worth 177.8 million Euros in 2020, a value which stands below the 195.5 million Euros recorded in the previous year. The share of exports made by those companies was of 66.3% in 2020 (71.9% in 2019).

Imports carried out by companies registered in the IBC were around 162.9 million Euros, an amount higher than the previous year, in which it reached 64.5 million Euros. This increase represented a growth in the share of imports made by companies licensed in the IBC of Madeira to 65.1% in 2020 (37.5% in 2019).

Regional Directorate of Statistics Madeira releases an update of the time series on “International Trade Statistics” (1976-2020)
