For the year 2021

DREM releases the “International Trade Statistics” publication

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the annual publication of the "International Trade Statistics", with the final results for the year 2021. The tables also include the results of 2019 and 2020.

In this publication of “International Trade of Goods”, regional information is presented regarding the trade of goods with the European Union and Third Countries, based on data declared by enterprises based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Information has been included on exports and imports (in both cases disaggregated into intra- and extra-EU) by:

- Product group

- Section and chapter of the Combined Nomenclature (CN)

- Classification by Broad Economic Categories (CGCE)

- Classification of Products by Activities (CPA)

- Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-Rev.3)

- Ranking of the main countries with which the Autonomous Region of Madeira trades

- Ranking of the main groups of traded products.

Region had a positive balance of trade with foreign countries for the fifth consecutive year

According to the final 2021 data on International Trade in Goods, the trade balance of goods transactions recorded a surplus of around 20.3 million euros, a value above that recorded in the previous year, when the positive balance in the Trade Balance with foreign countries had been 18.1 million euros.

The analysis by type of flow shows that exports fell by 0.4% in 2021, in overall terms, to 267.2 million euros, down by 1.1 million euros compared to the previous year.

The slight decrease in exports was essentially determined by the drop in exports to Intra-EU countries, which were around 100.6 million euros in 2021, a smaller value compared to the 133.7 million euros recorded in 2020. Trade in goods with Extra-EU countries increased from 134.6 million euros in 2020 to 166.6 million euros in 2021, an increase insufficient to offset the drop in the Intra-EU component.

Imports were around 247.0 million euros, showing a decrease of 1.3% in 2021, i.e., a 3.2 million euros drop. This decline is essentially justified by the fall in purchases to Extra-EU countries which did not exceed 81.7 million euros in 2021, 37.7 million euros below that recorded in the previous year. In turn, acquisitions made to Intra-EU countries grew from 130.8 million euros in 2020 to 165.3 million euros in 2021.

According to the analysis done by DREM, the enterprises licensed in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC) were responsible for exports worth 211.5 million euros in 2021, a figure higher than the 177.1 million euros observed in the previous year. The share of exports made by those enterprises was 79.1% in the year under review (66.0% in 2020).

With regard to imports by enterprises registered in the IBC of Madeira, the value of goods purchased from foreign enterprises in 2021 was around 143.3 million euros, lower than the previous year, when it reached 162.9 million euros. This decline represented a drop in the proportion of imports made by enterprises licensed in the IBC of Madeira to 57.3% in 2021 (65.1% in 2020).

DREM publishes an update of the International Trade Statistics Retrospective Series (1976-2021)

Following the release of the “International Trade Statistics 2021 - Final Results”, DREM updated the time series of International Trade Statistics.

Although the series contains data from 1976 to 2021, the figures are more detailed for the period from 1993 onwards. A summary table is also made available with the main data from 1976 to 1992, which includes information on the trade of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with the rest of the country, i.e., with the Mainland and the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

Besides the breakdown by Intra and Extra-Community trade, information is made available according to

-  Economic areas and main countries;

- Product group (GP);

- Section and chapter of the Combined Nomenclature (CN);

- Classification by Broad Economic Categories (CGCE);

- Classification of Products by Activities (CPA);

- Portuguese Classification of Economic Activities (CAE).
