Regarding the year 2021
DREM releases the definitive data of the International Trade Statistics
DREM releases today the definitive data of the "International Trade Statistics" for the year 2021. More information as well as the update of the time series of International Trade Statistics (1976-2021) will be published next October.
The Autonomous Region of Madeira records a positive Trade Balance with foreign countries for the fifth consecutive year
According to the final 2021 data for International Trade in Goods, the trade balance of goods transactions recorded a surplus of about 20.3 million euros, up from the previous year, when the positive balance of trade with foreign countries was 18.1 million euros.
The analysis by type of flow shows that exports fell slightly by 0.4% in 2021, standing at 267.2 million euros, -1.1 million euros compared to the previous year.
The slight decrease in exports was mainly determined by the drop in exports to Intra-EU countries, which were around 100.6 million euros in 2021, down from 133.7 million euros in 2020. Trade in goods with extra-EU countries rose from 134.6 million euros in 2020 to 166.6 million euros in 2021, an increase that was not enough to offset the drop in the Intra-EU component.
Imports were around 247.0 million euros, falling by 1.3% in 2021, meaning a drop of 3.2 million euros.
The decrease in imports of goods was limited by the transactions with non-EU countries, which did not exceed 81.7 million euros in 2021, - 37.7 million euros than in the previous year. In turn, purchases made from Intra-EU countries grew from 130.8 million euros in 2020 to 165.3 million euros in 2021.
It should be noted that regarding the preliminary data for 2021, there was a significant revision in the values of imports by approximately 45 million euros, as a result of the acquisition of a vessel by a company headquartered in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC).
