Note: On the 9th of February 2023, the year reference in the coverage rate of imports by exports was rectified, being 134.8% in 2022 (and not 2021).
In 2022
Trade balance of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries had a surplus of 92.0 million euros
According to provisional data for 2022, the Region's balance of trade in goods with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 92.0 million euros (20.3 million euros in 2021), thus maintaining the trend which started in 2017. The coverage rate of imports by exports stood at 134.8%, in 2022, higher than the one recorded in the previous year, which stood at 108.2%.
In 2022, exports totalled 356.7 million euros in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, having increased by 33.5% from the previous year, while imports stood at 264.6 million euros, growing by 7.2% from 2021. In the year under review, 66.5% of exports were destined for Third Countries (i.e. outside the EU) while 77.1% of imports came from the EU.
It should be highlighted that the values for 2022, both for exports and imports from foreign countries, are the highest ever recorded.
However, these figures only refer to the foreign trade of companies based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Most of the trade that the Autonomous Region of Madeira carries out is with the mainland. To date, there is no statistical information on this type of trade, although data on the trading of goods at regional ports, suggests that there is a large deficit in trade with the mainland. It should also be noted the importance of companies headquartered in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC) in the international trade of both flows. According to the latest data (2021), 77.5% of exports and 57.3% of imports were made by those companies.
