DREM releases the “International Trade Statistics-2014” publication
DREM releases today the annual publication “International Trade Statistics” (only available in Portuguese) which includes the provisional data for the year of 2014. The publication tables also include the final results for 2012 and 2013.
Analysis of the main indicators
In 2014, the trade balance of goods with foreign countries registered a surplus of 2.1 million Euros, which is the first surplus since these data began to be collected. In the previous year there was a trade deficit of 26.5 million Euros.
The positive balance in 2014 is explained by the surplus generated by the enterprises registered in the International Business Center (IBC) of Madeira, which stood at 55.3 million Euros. In fact, 79.0% of the exports and 35.0% of the imports were carried out by enterprises headquartered in the IBC.
From 2013 to 2014, both exports and imports increased by 48.1% and 10.5%, respectively. Madeira had a foreign trade surplus with Third Countries (76.7 million Euros) and a deficit with the INTRA-EU countries (-74.5 million Euros).
Exports for INTRA-EU countries increased from 20.3 million Euros in 2013 to 25.3 million Euros in 2014, while imports rose from 96.9 million Euros in 2013 to 99.8 million Euros in 2014.
In the trade with Third Countries, there was also an upward trend. Exports jumped from 63.2 in 2013 to 98.5 million Euros in 2014, while in the same order, imports increased from 13.1 to 21.8 million Euros.
