In the third quarter of 2018
Estimated unemployment rate was 8.9%
The Labour Force Survey results for the third quarter of 2018 indicate that the Unemployment Rate for Madeira was estimated at 8.9%. This value decreased by 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) when compared with the same quarter of 2017 and increased by 0.6 p.p. from the previous quarter.
Compared to the last quarter, the unemployment rate for Portugal remained unchanged at 6.7%, dropping by 1.8 p.p. year-on-year.
The estimate of the unemployed population in Madeira stood at 12.2 thousand persons, rising by 8.8% (+1.0 thousand unemployed persons).
The employed population was estimated at 125.1 thousand persons, representing a quarterly increase of 1.1% (+5.8 thousand persons employed).
The participation (or activity) rate for the population with 15 years and over reached 62.7%, 2.1 p.p above the year-ago quarter and up by 1.0 p.p from the last quarter. The participation rate of women was 57.2%, 12.2 p.p. below the participation rate of men (69.4%).
The Autonomous Regions of the Azores (8.7%) and Madeira (8.9%) are the regions with a higher (and positive) deviation from the national rate, while the Algarve (5,0%), Centro (5,4%) and Alentejo (6,6%) have the lowest unemployment rates amongst the Portuguese NUTS2 regions.
