Estimated unemployment rate for the 4th quarter 2018 was 8.9%, while the average for the year was 8.8%
The Labour Force Survey results for the fourth quarter of 2018 indicate that the Unemployment Rate for Madeira was estimated at 8.9%, remaining unchanged compared to the previous and year-ago quarters.
The unemployment rate for 2018 (average) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 8.8%, a drop of 1.6 percentage points (p.p.) from 2017, and the lowest value of the new series (which starts in 2011).
The estimate of the unemployed population in Madeira stood at 12.2 thousand persons, having recorded quarterly and year-on-year increases of 0.1% and 2.0%. After reaching a maximum in 2013 (24.0 thousand unemployed persons), the annual average successively dropped, standing at 11.9 thousand persons in 2018.
The employed population was estimated at 125.0 thousand persons, a year-on-year increase of 2.1 thousand employed persons (+1.7%) and a 100 persons decrease from the previous quarter (-0.1%).
As in the two previous quarters, the unemployment rate for Portugal stood at 6.7%, down by 1.4 p.p. from the same quarter of 2017. In annual terms, the unemployment rate decreased by 1.9 p.p. from 2017 to 7.0%.
