In the first quarter of 2019
Estimated unemployment rate was 7.0%
The Labour Force Survey results for the first quarter of 2019 indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 7.0%. This value decreased by 2.1 percentage points (p.p.) when compared with the same quarter of 2018 and decreased by 1.9 p.p. from the previous quarter. Madeira registered the highest unemployment rate since the 1st quarter of 2018, but in the reference quarter, Algarve became the worst region in this indicator (9.4%), followed by the Autonomous Region of Azores (8.4%) and Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (7.8%), with Madeira appearing as the region with 4th highest unemployment rate, among the 7 NUTS2 regions.
The unemployment rate for Portugal stood at 6.8%, up by 0.1 p.p. from the previous quarter and down by 1.1 p.p. year-on-year.
The estimate of the unemployed population in Madeira stood at 9.8 thousand persons, having recorded a quarterly decrease of 20.1% and a year-on-year decline of 19.1%.
The employed population was estimated at 129.1 thousand persons, representing a quarterly increase of 3.3% and a year-on-year growth of 6.6%.
