In the third quarter of 2019
Estimated unemployment rate was 6.9%
The Labour Force Survey results for the third quarter of 2019 indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 6.9%. This value is the same as in the previous quarter and decreased by 2.0 percentage points (p.p.) when compared with the same quarter of 2018. Thus, the unemployment rate, which corresponds to the number of unemployed persons per 100 active persons, has stabilized at around 7.0% in the last three quarters. The value of the third quarter of this year (and the same is true for the previous quarter), corresponds to the lowest of the current series, which began in the first quarter of 2011.
The estimate of the unemployed population in Madeira stood at 9.7 thousand persons, having recorded a quarterly decrease of 1.2% and a year-on-year drop of 21.0%.
The employed population was estimated at 130.0 thousand persons, representing a quarterly increase of 0.9% and a year-on-year growth of 3.9%. It should be noted that this is the first time that the employed population has reached the 130 thousand mark, a new high for the series beginning in the first quarter of 2011.
The unemployment rate for Portugal stood at 6.1%, down by 0.2 p.p. from the previous quarter and also down by 0.6 p.p. year-on-year. In the reference quarter, Autonomous Region of Azores remained as the region with the highest unemployment rate (7.3%, while Centro had the lowest rate, 4.8%.
