DREM releases results about work organisation and working time arrangements in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the first time

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases for the first time a set of tables for the Autonomous Region of Madeira which derive from the ad hoc module of the Labour Force Survey concerning work organisation and working time arrangements. This module was conducted in the 2nd quarter of 2019, conjoined with the Labour Force Survey, a statistical operation of national scope carried out by Statistics Portugal (INE). In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) the survey is coordinated by DREM.

For an estimated employed population of 128.9 thousand persons in the reference quarter, the main results were the following:

    • About 62.9% of the employed population declared that the employer or organization mainly decides working times. In the country, this percentage is slightly higher (64.7%);
    • 62.6% of the employed population says that it is quite easy or very easy to take one or two hours off for personal or family matters at short notice (67.6% in Portugal);
    • For 44.1% of the employed population it is quite easy or very easy to take one or two holiday days at short notice. In the country, this percentage is slightly lower (42.8%);
    • About 65.9%  of the employed population (63.3% in Portugal) indicates that they change the working hours less than every month or never due to work, clients or organisation (or employer) demand;
    • 61.6% of the employed population mentioned refer that they were never contacted during leisure time in the last two months. In Portugal this percentage is 6.3 percentage points lower (55.3%);
    • The manual record by one-self  is the most common method of recording the working hours in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (25.6%), contrarily to the country where the automatic record prevails (42.5%). In the Region this method was declared to be used by 25.2% of the employed population. 16.7% do not register presence nor hours, a share which stands slightly above Portugal (16.4%);
    • 19.1% of the employed population declared to work always or often under time pressure. In the country this percentage was higher (28.8%)  
    • 28.7% of the regional employed population affirmed to have influence on order and content of tasks (34.1% in Portugal).
    • The main place of worker was the employers' premises or own premises (69.9%), a smaller percentage when compared to Portugal (78.0%);
    • More than 2/3 (69.1%) of the employed population whose main workplace is not home takes less than 30 minutes from home to work, vis-a-vis 68.7% in the country;
    • 18.4% of workers in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reported flexibility in working time and autonomy in tasks, a percentage which is similar to the national average (18.6%).
