In the second quarter of 2020
Estimated unemployment rate was 6.7%
The Labour Force Survey results for the second quarter of 2020 indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 6.7%. This value increased by 1.1 percentage points (p.p.) when compared with the previous quarter and decreased by 0.2 p.p. from the same quarter of last year.
The estimate of the unemployed population in the A.R. Madeira stood at 8.6 thousand persons, having recorded a quarterly increase of 12.1% and a year-on-year decline of 10.2%.
The employed population was estimated at 119.8 thousand persons, representing a quarterly drop of 7.3% and a year-on-year decline of 7.1%.
The inactive population stood at 125.5 thousand persons in the reference quarter, increasing by 9.7% year-on-year and by 7.2% from the previous quarter.
The unemployment rate for Portugal stood at 5.6%, down by 1.1 p.p. than the previous quarter and down by 0.7 p.p. year-on-year.
In the 2nd quarter of 2020, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) has the second highest unemployment rate in the seven NUTS2 regions. In 3 regions of the country - Algarve (7.4%), ARM (6.7%) and Área Metropolitana Lisboa (6.5%) - the unemployment rate stood above the national average (5.6%). In Norte, the unemployment rate was the same as the national average (5.6%), while in Alentejo (3.3%), Centro (4.7%) and A.R. Azores (4.9%) the unemployment rates stood below that value.
It is important to keep in mind that the information of this quarter is influenced by the current situation determined by the pandemic COVID-19, either by the natural disturbance associated with the impact of the pandemic in obtaining primary information or by the behavioural changes resulting from the measures adopted by the national and regional governments to safeguard public health.
