In the 1st quarter of 2023
Unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 6.5%
The results of the Labour Force Survey for the 1st quarter of 2023 indicate an estimated unemployment rate of 6.5% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which is 0.4 percentage points (pp) lower than the previous quarter and 1.0 pp lower than the same quarter last year.
The estimated number of unemployed persons totalled 8.7 thousand, decreasing by 11.0% from the same quarter of last year (1.1 thousand persons) and by 5.2% compared to the previous quarter (around 500 persons).
The employed population reached approximately 124.7 thousand persons, indicating a year-on-year increase of 3.0% (3.6 thousand persons) and a quarterly increase of 1.2% (1.5 thousand persons). Among the employed population, 16.1 thousand persons worked from home (16.3% of employed women and 9.8% of employed men).
The activity rate of working-age persons (aged 16 to 89) in the 1st quarter of 2023 was estimated at 60.7%, which is 0.5 pp higher than in the same quarter last year and the same value as in the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 55.2%, which is 12.1 pp lower than that of men (67.3%).
The inactive population in the reference quarter was estimated at 121.2 thousand persons, showing a decrease by 0.9% compared to the same quarter of last year and an increase of 0.6% compared to the previous quarter.
In Portugal, the unemployment rate in the quarter under review was 7.2%, which is 0.7 pp higher than the previous quarter and 1.3 pp higher than the same quarter last year.
During the reference quarter, the regions with the highest unemployment rates were Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (8.0%), Norte (7.6%) Alentejo and Algarve (both with 7.2%). The regions with the lowest values were Centro (5.6%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (6.2%) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (6.5%). The only region that experienced a quarterly decrease in the unemployment rate was the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-0.4 pp). Alentejo recorded the highest quarterly increase (+1.7 pp), followed by Algarve (+0.9 pp).
Year-on-year, the unemployment rate decreased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-1.0 pp) and in the Autonomous Region of Azores (-0.4 pp), In the remaining regions, Norte had the highest increase (+2.2 pp), followed by Alentejo (+2.1 pp), Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (+1.2 pp) and Centro and Algarve (both with +0.2 pp).
